May 6th, 2009 by techwithbeck

Tech Tip(s) of the Week:

-          PASS is just around the corner and I know many of you are reviewing, reviewing, reviewing! Our students are very familiar with the Compass Learning resource we have here at school. Consider using this as review as well! Pull up lessons on your promethean board and work with a small group or class as a whole! Utilize this wonderful resource and help prep kids for their test!

-          Use the Test Builder in Compass Learning to assign test questions based on standards! Assign these for homework or use during computer time in class.

Google Ga-Ga…Try another SAFE Search Engine

April 23rd, 2009 by techwithbeck

Tech Tip(s) of the Week:

-          Though we all know and LOVE Google, it’s not the only search engine out there! Also, Google is not always the best search engine for our students (many inappropriate sites and images still show up) and is not encouraged to use at school. Take some time to explore a few different and safe search engines. Here are a few to check out:

            www.yahooligans.com

            www.askkids.com

            www.encyclopedia.com

            www.kidsclick.org

            www.squirrelnet.com/search/Google_SafeSearch.asp

Website(s) of the Week:

http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/storystarters/storystarter1.htm

Scholastic introduces an interactive Story Starter tool to get young writers motivated! This is a great tool to start off a writing workshop. There is even the option to differentiate based on individual student needs. Happy Writing!!

MAP Motivators

April 23rd, 2009 by techwithbeck

Tech Tip of the Week:

-          As motivation during the MAP testing, write each student’s previous score and/or current goal on a small piece of paper and distribute to them prior to the test. Let them see what they are working toward. Remember praise for any growth is important. The tests can be stressful!

-          Also, encourage students to READ as opposed to draw after the test. If students see they can draw, they tend to rush through the tests faster.

Share Something New…

April 23rd, 2009 by techwithbeck

Tech Tip of the Week:

- When you are in the computer lab, introduce your students to one new thing you know about computers. Whether is an icon they may not recognize, the term of the week, or a program you never tried, any introduction will help feed curiosity! Even open the floor to your students. Choose someone new each lab time to introduce one new thing they know or learned about computers.

Shared with us by Jill! This website has practice tests you can do on the computer.  You can sign on as a guest and go over the practice tests on your Promethean.  It would be a good way to not only practice the writing skills, but also teach test taking strategies, by showing students how to eliminate certain choices. First and Second grades, check out the Reading Runway for letter sound recognition and the Newton’s Classroom for math fact practice!

PASS Writing Prompts

March 2nd, 2009 by techwithbeck

Tech Tip of the Week:

- With the PASS writing just around the corner, be creative in finding writing motivators! Find a picture from the resource library and use the spotlight tool to show one small portion of the picture. Have the students write what they think it is or what is happening in the picture. Or fill a flipchart page with various pictures and words from the resource library or web. Have them choose 2-3 items to include somehow in their writing (FICTION OR NON-FICTION). Remember to let students share and peer-review. Let them use the Promethean microphone as a motivator!

Record Your Reading

March 2nd, 2009 by techwithbeck

Tech Tip of the Week:

- Use a microphone (headset or separate) to have students record themselves reading. This is great for your struggling readers to practice expression & fluency. Recording is a wonderful motivator for your more skeptical readers too! Hearing their voice is exciting and a great way for them to self-assess their reading skills. An easy way to have them record is using the sound creator in PowerPoint! (In PowerPoint, go to INSERT, MOVIES AND SOUND, RECORD SOUND). The sound will embed in the slideshow. See the attached example!

MAP Testing Vocabulary

March 2nd, 2009 by techwithbeck

Tech Tip of the Week:

-MAP testing is headed our way in March! Start discussing goals and strategies with your students. Stress the importance of taking their time and reading carefully. You may even want to introduce a MAP term in your reading groups (see attached). They are based on RIT ranges and will help students understand what is being asked during the test.
